Shelsky's of Brooklyn

Description

This appetizing Jewish shop came to Brooklyn in 2011, satiating the smoked salmon and pickled herring needs of brownstone dwellers who used to have to schlep to Russ & Daughters on the Lower East Side. Owner Peter Shelsky also has a catering company, Pete's Eats, and is the sole NYC retailer of the rich and smoky Tilgner's Ruby Red Olde World Scottish Style cold-smoked salmon, selling for $85/pound. Yes, you read that right, but many say it's worth it. Lesser-priced and amusingly named sandwiches (Fancy Pants, Holy Mackerel, Dr. Goldstein Special) are constructed on fresh bagels and bialys. There are also "bentowitz" boxes wherein you can assemble a meal from a list that includes chopped liver, rollmops, smoked bluefish salad with crunchy roasted hazelnuts and schmaltz-fried potato latkes.
