The shows that led the way in nominations—A Strange Loop, MJ and The Lehman Trilogy—all took home big prizes at the 2022 Tony Awards ceremony, which was held June 12. Michael R. Jackson won for best book (the second Black playwright, after Stew for Passing Strange, to receive that award), and his musical, A Strange Loop, took top honors in its prestigious category. Among the other big winners was young Myles Frost as lead actor in a musical for portraying Michael Jackson (the musician).

Voters acknowledged many other worthy productions and performances on a night that affirmed Broadway’s strong return. Among those not covered below, Six took home the hardware for best score in a musical and acting greats Patti Lupone and Phylicia Rashad won for their featured roles (Lupone in the musical Company, Rashad for the play Skeleton Crew). Find the winners and nominees in the major categories below.
