Hunting Wildlife with Camera and Flashlight: The Night Photography of George Shiras

Description

The Alice Austen house reopens this spring after a short winter closing with an exhibition from the man described by National Geographic as “the father of wildlife photography.” The many works of George Shiras will be on display at this quaint museum in Staten Island, showcasing his talent for photographing wildlife at night in its truest and most undisturbed form, and being one of the first to use camera traps and flash photography in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The starkness between the light hitting the animals and foliage against the blackness of night is truly a sight to behold.
