The late African-American photographer James Van Der Zee was known for his depictions of black New Yorkers, predominantly between the 1920s and ’50s, which earned him recognition as one of the great photographers of the 20th century. Van Der Zee was a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance, having photographed such legends as Marcus Garvey and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. The Howard Greenberg Gallery presents the first exhibition of Van Der Zee’s works in more than 15 years, showcasing 40 of his most influential portraits.
