Jewish Brighton Beach Walking Tour: From Luxury Resort to Little Odessa
This event has already occurred
Description
Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach has long been known for its Russian-speaking immigrants and as the subject of many films, including a spotlight in the Oscar-winning movie Anora; however, its history goes back much further. This tour takes visitors through sites from the waterfront neighborhood’s various stages, starting with its life as an upper middle class resort area in the late 1800s. In the 1920s, Jewish immigrants arrived looking to escape the overcrowding on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Once the Great Depression hit, things changed even more, but it eventually came back to life as Little Odessa by the Sea.
