Life was the first magazine of its kind that told stories through the powerful medium of photography rather than using words. Between the 1930s and '70s, however, only six female photographers were on its staff: Margaret Bourke-White, Marie Hansen, Martha Holmes, Hansel Mieth, Lisa Larsen and Nina Leen. This New-York Historical Society exhibition celebrates the extraordinary contribution to journalism by these women with more than 70 images they snapped throughout their careers.
