Lower East Side, 1975: Portrait of a Changing Jewish Neighborhood
This event has already occurred
Description
Richard Marc Sakols was on a quest to learn about his grandmother’s birthplace—the Lower East Side—when he ventured to Henry Street in 1975 as a young student, camera in hand. He ended up capturing an important time in this area’s (and the City’s) history. This exhibition recounts this era of cultural change, when the demographics of the once predominantly Jewish neighborhood were transforming. Left behind were numerous synagogues and businesses, which Sakols photographed with his Pentax SLR.
