The Roof Garden Commission: Alex Da Corte, As Long as the Sun Lasts

Description
Alex Da Corte, As Long as the Sun Lasts is this year’s site-specific commission for the Met’s Cantor Roof Garden. Da Corte’s work spans various mediums and focuses on deconstructing beloved (and contested) cultural icons. For this installation, that concept is brought to life through Da Corte’s to-scale sculpture of Sesame Street character, Big Bird. Unlike the big yellow Muppet we know and love, however, this metal and fiber glass bird will be painted blue—an homage the character Garibaldo from the Brazilian Sesame Street, “Vila Sésamo.” The name of the installation is taken from a short story by Italo Calvino. A visit to the rooftop installation to see Big Bird overlooking Central Park is free with museum admission.
