Migrations: The Making of America Festival

This event has already occurred

Description

This spring, Carnegie Hall celebrates how America came to be—through the migration of various cultures from other countries, whether by choice or by force. Three migrations are highlighted: the crossings from Scotland and Ireland in the 18th and 19th centuries; the immigration of Jewish people from Russia and Eastern Europe between 1881 and 1924; and African-Americans being pushed to northern cities from the South from 1917 to the 1970s. Musical genres such as bluegrass, klezmer, blues and jazz help to tell the stories of how these various cultures helped shape the America we know today.
