Mystical Symbolism: The Salon de la Rose+Croix in Paris, 1892–1897

Description

The first Salon de la Rose+Croix, held in 1892, was organized by Joséphin Péladan, a Rosicrucian and self-proclaimed high priest of the occult. As the 1890s were a period during which the religious and the occult practices often intertwined, these salons had great reach and featured artists from Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. In addition to works of art, the exhibit will explore the cult of personality that developed around figures including Richard Wagner and Joséphin Péladan as well as the contemporary reception of the salon.
