The New York Philharmonic’s season opens with a performance of the famed John Williams score to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, in conjunction with a screening of the film. More orchestral performances and world premieres follow, a number associated with three different programs: Project 19, which observes the centennial of the 19th amendment by highlighting female composers; Hotspots Festival, showcasing classical music innovation in Berlin, Reykjavik and New York City; and a celebration of former Philharmonic music director Gustav Mahler.
