Next Stop: Second Avenue Subway
This event has already occurred
Description
After being proposed in 1919, halted in the Great Depression, revived in 1975 and stopped again until work restarted in 2007, the Second Avenue Subway line finally opened on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on January 1 of this year. In celebration of this milestone, the New York Transit Museum presents an exhibition highlighting how this new line fits into the City’s “past, present and future transportation landscapes.” Included are historic maps, images and various artifacts and objects (like a cutting disk from a tunnel boring machine), all creating a timeline and giving viewers a sense of the magnitude of this accomplishment—and the roadblocks that almost prevented it.
