On Whitman’s 200th birthday, the New York Public Library celebrates the great American poet Walt Whitman by exploring the people, events and beliefs that shaped his work. On view are an early annotated version of Leaves of Grass, a termination letter from Whitman’s boss—who was scandalized by the book—plus letters, journals, published works and even a lock of his hair.
